Sir Partha Dasgupta is an Indian-British economist and Frank Ramsey Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Cambridge, and a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. His research interests span welfare and development economics; the economics of technological change; population, environmental, and resource economics; social capital; game theory; ecological economics, and the economics of malnutrition.
In this interview, Partha Dasgupta revisits his involvement in the Trust Seminar where he presented "Trust as a Commodity" in January 1986. Dasgupta reflects on the impact of game theory on approaches to trust in the late 1980s, particularly within the context of this seminar. He also examines the interplay between trust and rational choice theory and discusses the evolution of his work on social capital, which originated from his interest in the concept of trust.
